Chennai, Nov 19 (NationPress) Significant rainfall is anticipated in Tamil Nadu's Mayiladuthurai and Cuddalore districts on Wednesday and Thursday, attributed to a low-pressure system developing over the Bay of Bengal and the adjacent Kumari Sea.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a warning that this system is likely to progress in a west-northwest direction, resulting in widespread showers across various regions of Tamil Nadu. Intermittent rains have been affecting Chennai since early Tuesday, driven by the evolving low-pressure area.
Multiple areas of the city have experienced moderate to heavy rainfall throughout the day. Localities including Thiruvanmiyur, Mylapore, Adyar, Pattinapakkam, and Marina Beach recorded consistent rains, while Nungambakkam, Vadapalani, T. Nagar, Guindy, Anna Nagar, and Koyambedu also witnessed widespread showers.
In the western sections of the city, areas such as Valasaravakkam, Maduravoyal, and Vanagaram reported moderate rain. Southern Chennai experienced substantial rainfall, with Alandur, the airport vicinity, Pallavaram, Chrompet, and Vandalur receiving steady precipitation. Along Old Mahabalipuram Road, Sholinganallur and Chemmenchery reported heavy downpours, with nearby areas like Ottiyambakkam and Sithalapakkam also receiving consistent rain. Two-wheeler riders struggled to navigate through the heavy downpour.
In Chengalpattu district, heavy rain impacted Kalambakkam, Urapakkam, Guduvancheri, and Kattankolathur.
Meanwhile, the Western Ghats experienced sudden intense rain, resulting in flooding at waterfalls such as Courtallam Main Falls, Puliyaruvi, Chittaruvi, and Aintharuvi. Due to dangerously high water levels, authorities have temporarily prohibited bathing at these popular tourist destinations, disappointing many tourists and Sabarimala pilgrims.
According to IMD officials, the existing low-pressure area over the Bay of Bengal is expected to remain and continue its west-northwest trajectory.
Consequently, heavy rainfall is likely in Mayiladuthurai and Cuddalore districts on Wednesday and Thursday, while Chennai should prepare for moderate showers during this time.
The IMD also indicated that a fresh low-pressure system may develop over the southeast Bay of Bengal on November 22, potentially intensifying and bringing additional rain to Tamil Nadu later this week.
Authorities advise residents in vulnerable and low-lying areas to remain vigilant, as heavy rains may result in waterlogging, traffic disruptions, and potential flooding in certain regions. Fishermen are urged to adhere to weather advisories.
