Gwalior, July 25 (NationPress) Intense downpours have been lashing the Gwalior and Chambal divisions of Madhya Pradesh since July 24, disrupting daily life in numerous areas. Notably, significant waterlogging occurred at the government bungalow of Madhya Pradesh Assembly Speaker Narendra Singh Tomar in Gwalior, leading city officials to take prompt action on Friday.
Social media videos revealed that rainwater flooded the garden, gallery, and waiting areas of the bungalow. Plastic chairs meant for visitors were seen floating in the inundated garden and waiting hall.
Upon receiving reports, a team from the Gwalior Municipal Corporation arrived at Tomar's residence to remove the water using a motor pump.
A road adjacent to the bungalow was also submerged due to the heavy rains.
Since Thursday afternoon, the Gwalior-Chambal region has experienced considerable rainfall, leading to a flood-like situation in districts such as Shivpuri, Merena, Gwalior, Datia, Guna, and Ashoknagar.
Over the past 24 hours, several casualties related to the heavy rains have been reported in different districts within the Gwalior-Chambal region.
Tragically, two young girls were swept away in Shivpuri, and in another incident, a boy died after falling into a drain in Ashoknagar district on Thursday.
The Meteorological Department has issued alerts for moderate to heavy rainfall across more than 20 districts in Madhya Pradesh.
On Friday morning, light showers were noted in Bhopal, with the sky remaining overcast.
Meanwhile, the opposition Congress party has called for compensation for farmers who have suffered crop damage due to the incessant rains. Mukesh Nayak, the party’s media department chief, expressed grave concern over the extensive destruction caused by the continuous downpours in Dabra, Bhind, Shivpuri, Karera, and Datia districts.
Nayak stated that heavy rainfall has inflicted significant damage to crops across more than 200 villages in these five districts, including Sevdha, Bhander, and Datia development blocks.
Notably, after returning from a week-long trip abroad, Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Mohan Yadav convened a meeting with senior officials on July 22 to assess the flood situation across the state.
During this meeting, CM Yadav instructed officials to enhance the state’s flood preparedness and strengthen the alert and information systems to mitigate loss of life and property during heavy rains.
The Chief Minister emphasized continuous monitoring of river levels, advanced assessments of vulnerable zones, and timely establishment of relief camps with adequate shelter and food provisions.
Yadav also encouraged collaboration with social and religious organizations in relief initiatives and stressed the importance of raising public awareness through disaster preparedness training and mock drills.
