Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Tuesday, 4 August extended his support to students agitating in Jharkhand over alleged irregularities in state recruitment examinations, squarely blaming the ruling JMM-Congress-RJD alliance for failing to address candidate grievances in a transparent and timely manner. Sarma's intervention adds a sharp political dimension to a protest movement that has been gathering momentum in Ranchi.

Sarma's Stand

In a post on social media platform X, CM Sarma said he had personally witnessed the distress of recruitment aspirants during the Jharkhand Assembly election campaign. 'During the Jharkhand Assembly elections, I had the opportunity to closely witness the pain, anger and concerns of JSSC-CGL aspirants regarding the recruitment process,' he said.

Sarma maintained that the current unrest was avoidable. According to him, a sensitive and transparent response from the state administration at an earlier stage would have gone a long way in restoring confidence among job seekers. He alleged that repeated question paper leaks and examination irregularities had left the futures of 'lakhs of youth' in limbo.

What the Protesters Are Demanding

Students demonstrating in Ranchi have raised allegations of irregularities against both the Jharkhand Public Service Commission (JPSC) and the Jharkhand Staff Selection Commission (JSSC). Their specific demands include the cancellation of the 14th JPSC Combined Preliminary Examination held on 19 April and an independent probe by central agencies — specifically the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) and the Enforcement Directorate (ED) — into the alleged misconduct in the state's recruitment process.

Sarma's Call to the Jharkhand Government

Extending what he described as his 'moral support' to the agitating students, CM Sarma urged the Jharkhand government to act without delay. 'I express my moral support for this just movement of Jharkhand's students and youth and urge the state government to immediately accept the legitimate demands of the students and deliver justice to them. Injustice with the future of the youth cannot be acceptable at any cost,' he said.

Broader Context

Examination irregularity protests have become a recurring flashpoint across Indian states, with candidates increasingly demanding CBI-level scrutiny of recruitment bodies seen as compromised. This is not the first time the JSSC and JPSC have faced such allegations — critics argue that systemic reforms to examination oversight remain long overdue. Notably, Sarma's remarks come from outside Jharkhand, signalling that the issue is being watched closely at the national level and could become a political pressure point for the state's ruling coalition ahead of future electoral cycles.
