Bayern Munich's Hiroki Ito Faces Extended Absence Due to Metatarsal Injury

Synopsis

Hiroki Ito, a defender for Bayern Munich, faces an extended absence from the game due to a metatarsal fracture. This injury is a recurrence, and he will join other injured teammates as Bayern prepares for upcoming matches.

Key Takeaways

  • Hiroki Ito suffers a metatarsal fracture.
  • Joined Bayern from VfB Stuttgart last summer.
  • Max Eberl expresses support for Ito.
  • Bayern also missing Alphonso Davies and Dayot Upamecano.
  • Upcoming match against Inter Milan in Champions League.

Munich, March 30 (NationPress) Bayern Munich's defender Hiroki Ito will be sidelined for an extended duration due to a metatarsal fracture, as confirmed by the Bundesliga club on Sunday.

Ito has experienced a recurrence of a fracture in his right metatarsal, which was verified by the club's medical team through a scan. The Japanese international incurred the injury during Saturday's 3-2 victory against FC St. Pauli. He entered the game in the 58th minute but had to exit in the 89th.

The club also stated that Ito, who joined Bayern from VfB Stuttgart last summer, will be unavailable for a significant period.

“The news of another severe injury to Hiroki is a tough blow for all of us. He has only just returned after months of rehabilitation and will now face another extended absence – we can hardly fathom how he feels. He will receive all necessary support from us. He’s a fighter, and we eagerly anticipate his return to the pitch. Stay strong, Hiroki – FC Bayern stands with you,” commented board member for sport Max Eberl regarding Ito's injury.

Ito joins the growing list of injured players at Bayern, with the Bundesliga leaders also missing Alphonso Davies for a long duration after he was diagnosed with a torn cruciate ligament in his right knee following his international duty with the Canadian national team, undergoing surgery earlier this week.

Davies sustained the injury early in Canada’s 2-1 victory over the USA during a Concacaf Nations League third-place playoff last Sunday. This situation raises significant concerns for the Bavarian club, especially after recently securing a contract extension with the Canadian until June 2030.

In addition to Davies, Dayot Upamecano has also been ruled out for the upcoming weeks due to loose bodies in his left knee, rendering him unavailable for FC Bayern for several weeks.

“Following the injuries to Alphonso Davies and Dayot Upamecano, we have now lost a third defender in a short span. We will unite our efforts even more to continue striving towards our objectives,” Eberl added.

With Manuel Neuer also absent due to a calf injury, a depleted Bayern will face Inter Milan in the Champions League quarterfinals on April 8.
