Is Hyderabad Competing with Global Cities?
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Hyderabad, Feb 6 (NationPress) The Deputy Chief Minister of Telangana, Mallu Bhatti Vikramarka, stated on Friday that Hyderabad is in contention with prominent global cities regarding investment, talent, and quality of life. He mentioned that the state government, under the leadership of Chief Minister Revanth Reddy, has earmarked ₹20,000 crore for the progress of Hyderabad within a mere two-year timeframe.
Speaking at the CREDAI Property Exhibition at HITEX, he highlighted that numerous projects funded by this allocation have already been completed, while many others are underway.
He asserted that such a significant financial commitment for Hyderabad’s growth is unprecedented in the state's history.
The Deputy Chief Minister disclosed that ₹1,950.52 crore has been designated for the limits of the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC), ₹12,500 crore for the Hyderabad Metropolitan Water Supply and Sewerage Board (HMWSSB), and ₹4,365 crore for the Hyderabad Metropolitan Development Authority (HMDA).
Vikramarka characterized the merger of 27 adjacent urban local bodies with the GHMC as a historic move. This significant decision enables uniform civic amenities, integrated planning, and a cohesive development vision within the Outer Ring Road zone.
“Today, Hyderabad is recognized as one of the fastest-growing and most investment-friendly cities in the nation. This achievement is a result of decades of institutional development, democratic governance, and a commitment to inclusive progress by the people’s government,” he noted.
The Deputy Chief Minister emphasized that the current growth is built upon strong foundations established by visionary leaders in the past, which are now being reinforced by the present administration’s dedication to transparency, accountability, and governance centered around the public.
The amalgamation of municipalities demonstrates the government’s belief in equitable, balanced, and accessible urban development. Hyderabad is evolving as a single, integrated metropolitan area rather than a collection of isolated affluent regions.
He mentioned that under the Hyderabad City Innovative and Transformative Infrastructure Programme (H-CITI), projects are being executed with an investment exceeding ₹7,032 crore, including 45 significant flyovers, underpasses, and 10 road widening initiatives.
He revealed that projects worth ₹1,090 crore are underway around KBR Park to tackle traffic congestion. In the western corridor, multi-level flyovers at IIIT and Khajaguda, costing ₹837 crore, are bolstering the knowledge economy, while road expansion worth ₹70 crore is in progress in the western city areas.
In northern Hyderabad, alternative road networks near the Army Ordnance Centre are being developed with an investment of ₹960 crore to resolve longstanding traffic issues. In eastern Hyderabad, flyovers at TKR College, Gayatri Nagar, and Mandamallamma Junction are being constructed at a cost of ₹416 crore to enhance connectivity. The southern region is also seeing road widening projects valued at ₹863 crore to support rapid urban expansion.
These investments are decreasing travel times, enhancing logistics, boosting economic activities, elevating land values, and most significantly, improving the daily lives of ordinary citizens — including students, workers, entrepreneurs, and families, he stated.
He assured that Hyderabad will remain Telangana’s primary engine for employment, innovation, and global investments, while ensuring that development benefits reach every segment of society.
Nonetheless, he stressed that infrastructure alone does not define a great city; the true indicator of greatness lies in how a city treats its populace, especially its most vulnerable members.
With an eye on the year 2047, the government is formulating a comprehensive Storm Water Master Plan, particularly to aid low-lying and backward areas, ensuring flood safety and climate resilience. Additionally, through UMTA, integrated spatial master plans, blue-green master plans, and comprehensive mobility plans are being crafted to facilitate orderly, environmentally responsible, and accessible growth.
