Idukki, March 22 (NationPress) The picturesque hilly district of Idukki, celebrated for its stunning landscapes and challenging terrain, has been designated as the 'golden goose' of Kerala Tourism, reflecting the highest increase in foreign tourist arrivals among all 14 districts of the state, stated Tourism and Public Works Minister P. A. Mohamed Riyas on Saturday.

Despite being the largest district in terms of land area, it boasts the lowest population density compared to other districts in Kerala.

Moreover, a significant portion of Idukki is composed of reserved forests and wildlife sanctuaries, both essential attractions for visitors.

Riyas visited Idukki to inaugurate the newly established Eco-lodge and the refurbished heritage Guesthouse at Peerumedu.

The Eco-lodge has been developed at an investment of Rs 5.05 crore under the Swadesh Darshan initiative.

Detailing the tourism strategy, which stands as the most lucrative industry in the state, Riyas, who is also related to Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan, mentioned that Kochi will soon host a MICE Tourism Conclave, along with a Wellness Tourism Conclave in Kozhikode, aimed at promoting new offerings in the sector.

“Kerala Tourism is implementing a 'Look East' strategy to attract more tourists from East Asian nations. As part of this approach, we are partnering with Malaysian Airlines to invite influencers and travel agents from eight East Asian countries to Kerala, with Idukki and Wayanad set to gain the most,” Riyas added.

Local legislator Vazhoor Soman reminisced about Peerumedu's popularity in the past, particularly during the reign of the former royal family.

“With the implementation of new policies, Peerumedu is set to reclaim its status in tourism. A circuit linking locations like Panchalimedu, Vagamon, Uluppuni, and Sathram will be established,” Soman stated.

Kerala Tourism Director Sikha Surendran commented that the new Eco-lodge will enhance the potential for farm tourism in Peerumedu.
