Kolkata, July 12 (NationPress) A significant confusion has emerged regarding the alleged rape incident involving a victim at the Indian Institute of Management- Calcutta (IIM-C) in the boys’ hostel. On Saturday, the victim’s father stated that “nothing happened” to his daughter and that “no one did anything wrong” with her.
Earlier today, a lower court in Kolkata remanded the sole accused, Premanand Mahaveer Toppannavar, also known as Parmanand Jain (26), to police custody until July 19.
This statement starkly contrasts the victim's account provided in her official complaint filed at the local Haridevpur Police Station on Friday night after the alleged sexual assault.
According to her police statement, she visited the boys’ hostel on the IIM-C campus, summoned by the accused for counseling purposes. During her visit, she was offered pizza and cold drinks, after which she became unconscious. She alleged that she was raped during her time in the boys’ hostel.
However, her father claimed that she called him at 9:34 p.m. on Friday, stating she had fallen ill after falling from a vehicle. “That is why she became unconscious. She could not recall the exact location where she lost consciousness. As for the police complaint, I believe she was under some kind of pressure to write that,” he remarked.
While the victim's father did not specify who he suspects might have pressured his daughter into making the police statement, he denied any acquaintance between his daughter and the accused.
Meanwhile, the accused's counsel informed the media that his client was introduced to the victim via social media. “The victim, who is said to be a professional psychological counselor, visited the Lake View Boys Hostel within the IIM-C campus for counseling purposes. Considering my client’s future, I urge everyone not to disclose his identity,” stated the counsel.
The public prosecutor mentioned that the investigating officials are currently analyzing the mobile phone of the accused, which has been seized.
