Kolkata, July 13 (NationPress) - Authorities have established a nine-member Special Investigation Team (SIT) to investigate the alleged rape of an outsider by a second-year student at the Indian Institute of Management-Calcutta (IIM-C) within the campus hostel located at Joka, Kolkata.
According to state police sources, the initial responsibility of the SIT will be to clarify the discrepancies arising from opposing statements made by the victim and her father.
The victim claimed in her statement that the accused invited her to the boys' hostel on Friday evening for counseling and allegedly served her pizza and cold drinks that were spiked with sedatives. Following her consumption of the food, she reported falling unconscious.
As per her account to law enforcement, the accused, Parmanand Mahaveer Toppannavar (also known as Parmanand Jain, 26), proceeded to assault her while she was incapacitated.
In contrast, the victim's father stated to the media that the incident did not occur, asserting that his daughter lost consciousness after falling from a vehicle.
Despite the court's decision on Saturday afternoon to remand the accused into police custody until July 19, the victim's father remained steadfast in his assertion.
The SIT will also investigate the alleged security breach at IIM-C, where the victim entered the boys' hostel without registering her name in the visitors' book.
Officers from the Haridevpur Police Station, which oversees the Joka campus, have sent a formal request to IIM-C authorities for clarification regarding their security protocols and to determine if there was a breach of these protocols on the night of the incident.
On Saturday, IIM-C representatives stated they would not comment on the matter as it is currently under investigation.
