Key Takeaways
Washington, Dec 7 (NationPress) The International Monetary Fund has declared that its top priority is Sri Lanka's request for urgent financial assistance, coinciding with the deployment of US Air Force C-130J aircraft and a specialized airlift team to aid relief operations following Cyclone Ditwah.
“Given the request from the Sri Lankan authorities for emergency financing, the IMF Board will prioritize the consideration of the Rapid Financing Instrument (RFI) at this time,” stated an IMF spokesperson.
“An IMF team is set to visit Sri Lanka in early 2026 to continue discussions on the completion of the Fifth Review of the Extended Fund Facility (EFF). The assistance provided through the RFI will supplement Sri Lanka’s EFF access.”
As negotiations for financing progressed, the Trump administration acted swiftly to enhance Sri Lanka's humanitarian efforts.
“The United States is committed to supporting Sri Lanka. US Air Force C-130Js and a specialized airlift team are already in the field to assist with Cyclone Ditwah relief, delivering essential supplies across the nation alongside @AirForceLK,” noted the State Department’s Bureau of South and Central Asian Affairs. “America is aiding Sri Lanka in reaching its most affected communities promptly and efficiently.”
US Ambassador to Sri Lanka, Julie Chung, expressed her gratitude upon the arrival of the personnel at Katunayake Air Base. “Today, I welcomed US Air Force Airmen aboard two C-130J Super Hercules aircraft dispatched by US Indo-Pacific Command @INDOPACOM to support Sri Lanka’s response to Cyclone Ditwah,” she stated.
“The @USAirForce is here to assist significantly—bringing American airlift and logistics expertise to facilitate the swift distribution of relief supplies to affected communities nationwide in collaboration with Sri Lankan partners,” she added.
The US Embassy in Colombo highlighted that “an expert team from the @usairforce has arrived with C-130s to offer logistics and airlift support—they will aid Sri Lanka in continuing to provide vital humanitarian assistance to the island’s most devastated regions.” It further emphasized that enduring cooperation and joint training with the Sri Lankan military enhances their collective ability to respond swiftly and effectively during crises.
Cyclone Ditwah has resulted in severe flooding and infrastructure damage across multiple areas, intensifying challenges for Sri Lanka as it works through an IMF-supported economic stabilization program.
