Imtiaz Ali Describes ‘Safar’ Featuring Shah Rukh Khan as a Reflection of Today’s Human Experience
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Mumbai, April 20 (NationPress) Renowned Indian filmmaker Imtiaz Ali is preparing for the premiere of his new film ‘Main Vapas Aaunga’. He recently discussed the creation of the song ‘Safar’ from the Shah Rukh Khan-led film ‘Jab Harry Met Sejal’, noting that it beautifully captures the psyche of the modern individual.
During a promotional interview with IANS, the director revealed that the song has undergone a unique evolution. Initially envisioned as a somber blues piece, it ultimately blended elements of “country and blues.”
Ali elaborated, “When we first conceptualized it, it was a very bluesy track. As we progressed, it transformed, yet it retains that essence of ‘country meets blues’. It’s a song that resonates well with the guitar and feels very relevant today. The line penned by Irshad, ‘idhar ka hi hoon na, udhar ka raha, safar ka hi tha main safar ka raha,’ reflects a sense of disconnection—being neither from where you came nor where you're headed. It embodies the state of the contemporary human.”
‘Safar’ stands out as one of the most memorable tracks in Pritam’s musical repertoire, notable for its intricate structure, orchestration, and instrumental layering.
He continued, “The feeling of being in a constant state of travel, of flux, is prevalent. I find this song to be intriguing. I particularly enjoyed filming the scenes for it, especially the ones at the railway station. There was a shot in Budapest with SRK sitting as a train approached, which was incredibly fulfilling.”
Meanwhile, ‘Main Vapas Aaunga’ is produced by Sameer Nair and Deepak Segal of Applause Entertainment, along with Mohit Choudhary and Shibasish Sarkar of Window Seat Films. The film is slated for a theatrical release on June 12, 2026.
