Imtiaz Ali: Remembering History to Prevent Repetition
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Mumbai, April 21 (NationPress) Renowned Indian filmmaker Imtiaz Ali is preparing for the premiere of his forthcoming film 'Main Vapas Aaunga' and emphasizes the importance of learning from history to avoid repeating past mistakes.
In a conversation with IANS during the film's promotional activities, Ali expressed that human existence and the world operate in cycles, making it essential to remember history. He stated, "There is an inevitability. As the saying goes, one who forgets history is destined to repeat it. Hence, we must learn from our experiences and strive to improve." He lamented that often, individuals fail to do so, resulting in the recurrence of historical atrocities. "When the same cruel events unfold repeatedly, it is our duty to infuse some sweetness into the bitterness," he added.
Ali elaborated, "As artists, it is our responsibility to inspire hope and highlight the silver lining amidst darkness. We achieve this by sharing stories that resonate with the heart and open the soul. Yet, a film remains a film, and a story is merely a story. In this context, 'Main Vapas Aaunga' recounts a simple narrative set during the partition era, remembered 78 years later."
The film signifies the second collaboration between Ali and Diljit Dosanjh, set against the backdrop of India’s partition, which marks the largest mass migration in human history. This event resulted in the division of India, displacing an estimated 14 to 18 million individuals.
Produced by Sameer Nair and Deepak Segal of Applause Entertainment, alongside Mohit Choudhary and Shibasish Sarkar of Window Seat Films, the film is slated for release in theaters on June 12, 2026.
