Imtiaz Ali Discusses Language in Cinema: A Natural Evolution
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Mumbai, April 19 (NationPress) Renowned Indian filmmaker Imtiaz Ali, who is preparing for the launch of his next movie, ‘Main Vapas Aaunga’, expressed that he embraces a tolerant view towards the diverse types of language found in cinema. He indicated that the language of film largely adheres to Darwin's theory of survival of the fittest.
In an interview with IANS during the promotional phase of ‘Main Vapas Aaunga’, he elaborated on the various linguistic styles employed in contemporary Hindi cinema, including the use of vulgar language to effectively relay a narrative, emotion, or theme.
Imtiaz stated, “As a viewer, I do not pass judgment. I believe every artist should possess the liberty to express their creativity.”
He further explained to IANS, “Living in a democracy, we should allow individuals to choose what they wish to see. Cinema, being an inherently democratic medium, allows audiences to purchase tickets for the films they desire to watch. No one has the right to dictate what is good or bad for them. Just as they select their government, they select their films. I understand that numerous films contain dialogues that may be shocking or controversial; however, I believe that through a natural process of deselection, such dialogues will eventually fade away as audiences determine their preferences.”
Imtiaz continued, “What I can do is express my vision through my films. I cannot create what I do not possess. My work reflects my personal experiences, and thankfully, it is not presented in an offensive manner. I am content with that.”
‘Main Vapas Aaunga’, produced by Sameer Nair and Deepak Segal from Applause Entertainment, in collaboration with Mohit Choudhary and Shibasish Sarkar from Window Seat Films, is scheduled to hit theaters on June 12, 2026.
