Srinagar, July 4 (NationPress) - On Friday, Union Minister for Petroleum and Natural Gas, Hardeep Puri, alongside Jammu and Kashmir L-G, Manoj Sinha, officially inaugurated the Yatri Niwas and disaster management complexes at the Baltal Yatra base camp.
L-G Manoj Sinha shared on X: “I inaugurated the Yatri Niwas Complex at Baltal, Ganderbal, designed to serve pilgrims of Shri Amarnath Ji Yatra. This facility can accommodate up to 800 pilgrims and includes a registration and security block. Ensuring safe and adequate accommodation for all devotees is our utmost priority.”
While the Union Minister participated in the event virtually, L-G Manoj Sinha led the physical ceremony.
Notable attendees included ONGC Chairman Arun Kumar Singh and EIL CMD Vartika Shukla.
The newly launched Baltal complex spans an impressive 6,315 square meters and comprises a Yatri Niwas, a VIP Guest House, security blocks, and advanced disaster management facilities.
During the event, Union Minister Hardeep Singh Puri stated, “Through its CSR initiatives, ONGC has played a pivotal role in nation-building by bolstering essential social infrastructure, especially in regions that are geographically and administratively challenging and culturally significant.”
L-G Manoj Sinha remarked, “We owe much to ONGC; the facilities for the Amarnath Yatra have seen remarkable improvements.”
Post-inauguration, ONGC Chairman and CEO Arun Kumar Singh emphasized, “ONGC’s dedication to social development is as profound as its commitment to national energy security. We are honored to contribute to this crucial infrastructural project.”
ONGC is also in the process of developing disaster management and Yatri Niwas complexes at Nunwan (Pahalgam), Bijbehara, and Sidhra along the Amarnath Yatra Route.
This infrastructure initiative is part of ONGC’s CSR efforts.
The Yatri Niwas at these four locations will guarantee the safety and comfort of devotees engaging in the Amarnath Yatra.
Each year, over five lakh individuals undertake this pilgrimage. The permanent complexes are also expected to benefit the local communities.
The Shri Amarnath Ji Shrine Board will oversee the maintenance and operation of these facilities. However, construction in Jammu and Kashmir poses numerous challenges.
Extreme winter conditions, particularly from October to March, limit the fair-weather construction period. Security-related disruptions have further complicated matters, causing administrative restrictions and the departure of non-local laborers.
Nonetheless, through dedicated efforts and leveraging extensive experience in working within a constrained fair-weather window, the timely completion of the Baltal complex underscores ONGC’s capability to deliver under challenging circumstances.
Current construction efforts at Nunwan (8,500 sqm) and Bijbehara (7,640 sqm) aim for completion by September 2025.
These sites will feature dormitories, sewage treatment plants, and other essential facilities.
The Sidhra site (8,500 sqm), designed as a sustainable G+5 structure with solar panels, is expected to be operational by September 2026.
Collectively, these projects, covering over 30,955 square meters, will provide safer and more comfortable amenities for the public,” stated ONGC.
