New Delhi, Aug 18 (NationPress) The INDIA Bloc is set to convene a meeting today at 5:30 P.M. at the residence of Congress National President Mallikarjun Kharge in New Delhi to determine the Opposition's candidate for the upcoming vice presidential election.

Leaders from various political parties, including the Samajwadi Party, Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD), and Shiv Sena (UBT), are anticipated to participate in this crucial gathering aimed at selecting the candidate for the position of Vice President of India.

Earlier today, Congress General Secretary (Organisation), K.C. Venugopal, confirmed that the INDIA Bloc will unveil its vice presidential candidate later this evening.

He emphasized that discussions with coalition partners are ongoing, and a joint decision will be reached soon.

"The Congress will not act alone in this matter. We are consulting all our partners, and a collective decision will be announced. The DMK has already stated its position. Everything should be finalized by Monday evening," Venugopal informed the media.

This meeting follows the ruling BJP-led NDA's announcement on Sunday of its candidate for the vice presidential election, Maharashtra Governor C.P. Radhakrishnan, scheduled for September 9.

The election was called after Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar resigned on July 21 due to health concerns, submitting his resignation to President Droupadi Murmu.

Currently, the numbers appear to favor the NDA. The Electoral College, comprising 786 members from both the Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha, requires 394 votes for a simple majority to elect the Vice President.

With 293 MPs in the Lok Sabha and 129 in the Rajya Sabha, along with the support of nominated members, the NDA holds approximately 422 votes, giving it a significant advantage.

In contrast, the INDIA Bloc commands around 300 MPs across both Houses. Even with a united front, this election may present a tighter race compared to past elections.

Although the competition may be closer this time, the overall outcome still seems to favor the NDA.

Point of View

The decision by the INDIA Bloc today is critical for the Opposition's strategy in the face of a dominant NDA. While their numbers are strong, a united front will be essential to challenge the ruling coalition effectively. The implications of this choice extend beyond the election itself, impacting future political dynamics in India.
