India and China Explore Future of SCO Amid Bilateral Talks

New Delhi, April 17 (NationPress) India and China engaged in Bilateral Consultations regarding the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) in New Delhi, focusing on the execution of the decisions made by the SCO Leaders and the organisation's prospective path.

Leading the delegations during the discussions held on April 16-17 in New Delhi were India's SCO National Coordinator, Ambassador Alok A Dimri, and China’s National Coordinator, Ambassador Yan Wenbin.
The delegations jointly approached Secretary (West) Shri Sibi George to evaluate cooperation within the SCO framework, which includes sectors such as security, trade, connectivity, and cultural exchanges. They agreed on continuing mutual consultations in the future, as reported by the MEA.
Founded on June 15, 2001, the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) initially comprised China, Russia, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, and Uzbekistan. India and Pakistan were added as members in 2017, with Iran joining in 2023 and Belarus anticipated to join in 2024, bringing the total membership to 10.
The SCO also includes two observer states, Afghanistan and Mongolia, along with 14 dialogue partners, which are Azerbaijan, Armenia, Cambodia, Nepal, Turkey, Sri Lanka, Saudi Arabia, Egypt, Qatar, Bahrain, the Maldives, Myanmar, the United Arab Emirates, and Kuwait.
Kyrgyzstan is set to assume the SCO chairmanship for 2025-2026, with President Sadyr Japarov announcing the theme: "25 Years of the SCO: Together Towards Sustainable Peace, Development, and Prosperity."
On April 1, China's Ambassador to India, Xu Feihong, expressed Beijing's willingness to bolster strategic alignment, deepen practical cooperation, and enhance exchanges between the peoples of the two nations, as both celebrated the 76th anniversary of their diplomatic relations.
"Today marks the 76th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between China and India. China and India are neighbors that cannot be moved apart. It is the right choice for both sides to be good-neighborly friends and partners that help each other succeed, and realize the 'Dragon-Elephant Tango,'" Xu stated on X.
