Why is India Accusing Pakistan of Misusing Self-Determination?
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
United Nations, Jan 16 (NationPress) India has criticized Pakistan for misappropriating the concept of self-determination to undermine democratic and pluralistic nations by propagating falsehoods regarding Kashmir.
“In a time when member states should transcend their narrow interests, Pakistan continues to exploit every platform and procedure at the UN to promote their divisive agenda,” stated Eldos Punoose, a counselor at India’s UN Mission, during the General Assembly session on Thursday.
“The right to self-determination is a core principle established in the UN Charter. However, this right should not be manipulated to foster secession in democratic and pluralistic states,” he emphasized.
Punoose affirmed, “The Union Territory of Jammu and Kashmir is an integral and non-negotiable part of India.”
His remarks were in response to Pakistan’s Permanent Representative, Asim Iftikhar Ahmad, who referenced Kashmir as the Assembly deliberated on Secretary-General Antonio Guterres’s report on the UN's activities over the past year.
Regardless of the agenda, Pakistan consistently raises the issue of Kashmir, even though other nations tend to dismiss its claims, allowing them to fade into irrelevance.
“This forum is not an exception, and Pakistan made an unjustified reference to the Union Territory of Jammu and Kashmir, which is an integral and non-negotiable part of India,” Punoose noted.
“While habitual, Pakistan would benefit from refraining from groundless accusations and distortions that present a view entirely disconnected from reality,” he added.
Ahmad, as previously, mentioned self-determination for the Palestinian people while subtly referencing Kashmir.
He called for adherence to UN resolutions.
However, Security Council Resolution 47, passed on April 21, 1948, mandates that Pakistan withdraw its forces and infiltrators from all of Kashmir.
India asserts that a plebiscite in Kashmir is no longer relevant, as the people of Kashmir have demonstrated their allegiance to India through participation in elections and by electing local leaders.
Ahmad reiterated Pakistan’s opposition to the expansion of the Security Council’s permanent membership, driven solely by its hostility towards India.
This places Pakistan at odds with the majority of UN members, particularly African nations, who have been denied permanent representation due to the colonial legacy over the formation of the global organization.
