New Delhi, Sep 13 (NationPress) - On Saturday, Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal reaffirmed India's dedication to finalizing a mutually advantageous free trade agreement (FTA) with the European Union (EU) within this year.
During a meeting with Maros Sefcovic, the Commissioner for Trade and Economic Security, he expressed optimism for ongoing discussions.
“It was a delight to host you for the 13th Round of India-EU FTA negotiations. Our commitment is unwavering as we work towards a balanced and beneficial FTA that will unveil tremendous opportunities for both parties. Thank you for your visit, and I look forward to our continued discussions,” the Commerce Minister shared on X.
Sefcovic noted that this was his third visit to India this year to propel the ambitious EU-India FTA alongside Minister Goyal.
“Our goal is to maximize efforts to conclude negotiations by 2025, with the auto sector at its core, enhancing two-way trade through mutually beneficial tariff liberalization,” he posted on X.
At a recent event in the national capital, Sefcovic highlighted the groundbreaking FTA negotiations between India and the EU, describing the discussions as some of the most constructive and intensive ever undertaken by the two partners.
He emphasized that while previous attempts at negotiating an FTA had been made, never before had the process achieved such a level of seriousness, trust, and shared ambition.
The Commissioner stated that efforts are being intensified to finalize negotiations by year-end, adhering to commitments made by Prime Minister Narendra Modi and European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen.
He remarked that India is rapidly evolving into a vital player in the global economy, and a robust economic partnership with India would greatly benefit the EU, just as Europe’s technology and scale would support India’s growth narrative.
Goyal elaborated that the FTA will create new opportunities for Indian manufacturers to collaborate with their European counterparts and global companies, fostering joint ventures, technology collaborations, and innovative partnerships.
