Key Takeaways
New Delhi, March 29 (NationPress) - Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal had a meeting with Maros Sefcovic, the European Commissioner for Trade and Economic Security, during the 14th Ministerial Conference (MC14) of the World Trade Organisation (WTO) held in Cameroon. They assessed the advancements regarding the India-EU free trade agreement (FTA).
The two leaders engaged in discussions regarding significant priorities outlined in the MC14 agenda and reviewed the ongoing efforts towards finalizing the India-EU FTA, a commitment made by Prime Minister Narendra Modi and European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen in January 2026 in New Delhi.
“We also explored ways to further enhance our bilateral economic and trade cooperation,” Goyal stated in a post on X.
Additionally, Goyal had a meeting with Nigeria's Minister of Industry, Trade and Investment, Dr. Jumoke Oduwole, where they discussed the MC14 agenda and sought opportunities to bolster trade and economic collaboration between their nations.
A fruitful dialogue with Mauro Vieira, Brazil's Minister of Foreign Affairs, led to an exchange of perspectives on the MC14 agenda, along with strengthening bilateral trade connections and expanding the India-MERCOSUR PTA.
During the WTO conference, India demonstrated its resolve to uphold Mahatma Gandhi’s principle of truth over conformity by opposing the contentious Investment Facilitation for Development (IFD) Agreement, declining its inclusion as an Annex 4 Agreement within the WTO framework.
“The inclusion of the IFD Agreement poses a risk to the operational boundaries of the WTO and jeopardizes its core principles,” Goyal remarked.
Amid discussions on WTO reform, member nations are deliberating on necessary guardrails and legal protections for plurilateral agreements prior to the acceptance of any specific plurilateral outcomes.
“Given the systemic challenges at hand, India has expressed readiness for good faith discussions and constructive engagement within the WTO Reform Agenda,” the minister emphasized.
Goyal also took the opportunity to connect with the Indian diaspora in Cameroon, recognizing their role as a vital link in strengthening relationships and fostering goodwill between nations.
“I was pleased to address the Indian Community Reception in Cameroon and highlight the vast potential for deepening our bilateral relations,” Goyal concluded.
