Synopsis
Key Takeaways
New Delhi, March 29 (NationPress) On Sunday, Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal engaged in discussions aimed at enhancing India's trade and investment ties with African nations during a meeting with ministers and ambassadors from various African countries, taking place at the WTO ministerial conference in Cameroon.
"I had a fruitful dialogue with ministers and ambassadors from the Africa Group members during the 14th ministerial conference of the World Trade Organisation (WTO MC14). We held significant discussions surrounding investments, particularly in relation to increasing India's investments in Africa," Goyal stated via a post on X after the meeting.
He further noted, "Our conversations underscored the historical and civilizational connections between India and Africa, while we exchanged insights on enhancing bilateral trade and the agenda of MC14."
Additionally, Goyal held discussions with European Commissioner for Trade and Economic Security, Maros Sefcovic, on the sidelines of the WTO ministerial conference.
The two leaders explored key priorities under the MC14 agenda and reviewed the progress towards finalizing the India-EU Free Trade Agreement (FTA), as was announced by Prime Minister Narendra Modi and European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen in January 2026 in New Delhi.
"We also discussed ways to deepen our economic and trade partnership," Goyal mentioned in a post on X.
Moreover, Goyal met with Dr. Jumoke Oduwole, Nigeria's Minister of Industry, Trade and Investment, where they engaged in talks regarding the MC14 agenda and the potential to bolster economic cooperation between their nations.
A productive conversation took place with Mauro Vieira, Brazil's Minister of Foreign Affairs, focusing on the MC14 agenda, the strengthening of bilateral trade relations, and the enhancement of the India-MERCOSUR PTA.
During the WTO meeting, inspired by Mahatma Gandhi’s principle of truth triumphing over conformity, India demonstrated the courage to oppose the inclusion of the Investment Facilitation for Development (IFD) Agreement into the WTO framework as an Annex 4 Agreement.
Goyal expressed, "Incorporating the IFD Agreement could undermine the fundamental principles and functional limits of the WTO."
As discussions surrounding WTO reform continue, members are deliberating on necessary safeguards for plurilateral agreements prior to integrating any specific outcomes.
