New Delhi, March 30 (NationPress) Union Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal announced on Monday that India's position at the recently concluded WTO Ministerial Conference (MC14) in Cameroon was not only acknowledged but also mirrored in the final results, highlighting the nation's increasing role in influencing global trade dialogues.
As he concluded his four-day journey to Cameroon, where he took part in the WTO Ministerial Conference, Goyal pointed out that the global trading environment has significantly transformed since the last similar gathering in Africa ten years prior.
He underscored that India was pivotal in voicing the concerns of the Global South, ensuring that the aspirations and needs of developing countries and Least Developed Countries (LDCs) were duly recognized during the negotiations.
“India engaged constructively with all agenda items, and in areas of strong concern, we adopted positions grounded in openness, fairness, non-discrimination, and inclusivity,” the minister stated in a post on the social media platform X.
Goyal further mentioned that these principles are fundamental to India's participation in the World Trade Organisation (WTO).
During the conference, the minister also conducted several bilateral discussions with various nations, trading blocs, and key African states, which he said fostered enhanced understanding and support for India's positions on vital matters.
He expressed gratitude to officials from the Department of Commerce, India's Permanent Mission in Geneva, and other ministries and experts who worked diligently to protect the country's interests at the global forum.
Looking forward, the minister affirmed that India will persist in engaging with WTO members on essential global trade issues in a transparent, constructive, and good-faith manner.
The WTO Ministerial Conference serves as the organization’s highest decision-making body, playing a crucial role in shaping global trade policies and regulations. The MC14 conference began on March 26 and wrapped up on March 29.
This event saw participation from ministers worldwide who gathered to discuss both the challenges and opportunities confronting the multilateral trading system and to deliberate over the WTO’s future agenda.
Additionally, the conference was led by Cameroon’s Minister of Trade, Luc Magloire Mbarga Atangana.
