Synopsis
Key Takeaways
New Delhi, March 30 (NationPress) Minister of Commerce and Industry, Piyush Goyal, has stressed the need for a World Trade Organization (WTO) that is both balanced and responsive, one that effectively caters to the needs and aspirations of all its members, especially the developing nations and Least Developed Countries (LDCs).
During the 14th WTO Ministerial Conference (MC14) in Yaounde, Cameroon, Goyal engaged in significant discussions with Dr. Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, the WTO's Director-General.
“I acknowledged her persistent efforts in fostering consensus for a successful MC14,” Goyal shared in a post on X.
He also congratulated Prime Minister Joseph Dion Ngute and Trade Minister Luc Magloire Mbarga Atangana for their successful organization of the 14th WTO Ministerial Conference in Cameroon.
“I will take back with me fond memories of the generous hospitality extended by the Cameroonian people, their rich culture, and stunning landscapes,” the minister expressed.
On the sidelines of the conference, Goyal met with EU Trade Commissioner Maros Sefcovic, where both parties discussed the MC-14 agenda, reviewed the progress towards signing the recently concluded India-EU Free Trade Agreement (FTA), and explored avenues for enhancing bilateral trade and economic cooperation, according to an official statement.
Goyal and Sefcovic concurred on the urgent need for WTO reforms. They also deliberated on the moratorium on customs duties concerning electronic transmissions and the integration of the Investment Facilitation for Development Agreement.
Additionally, Goyal held a bilateral discussion with Maninder Sidhu, Canada's Minister of International Trade, focusing on accelerating the recently initiated India-Canada Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (CEPA) negotiations.
Beyond the FTA framework, both parties agreed on the necessity to devise a diversified sectoral engagement strategy and to broaden cooperation in areas such as shipbuilding, pharmaceuticals, tourism, and education.
Sidhu warmly welcomed Goyal for his anticipated visit to Canada in May 2026, where he will lead a significant Indian business delegation.
Goyal also held a meeting with Peter J. Kyle, the UK Secretary of State for Business and Trade.
During this meeting, both sides exchanged perspectives on the MC-14 agenda and assessed the implementation progress of the India-UK Comprehensive Economic Trade Agreement (CETA), signed in July 2025 by Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Prime Minister Keir Starmer.
