New Delhi, March 28 (NationPress) The Minister of Commerce and Industry, Piyush Goyal, has highlighted the necessity for WTO discussions to confront the imbalances emerging from the Uruguay Round. He stressed that it is crucial for all members to have a fair chance to enhance productive capacity, generate employment, and engage effectively in global trade.
The minister asserted that the multilateral trading framework should guarantee that innovation, development, and opportunities are distributed fairly among all members. He reiterated India’s dedication to participate constructively, ensuring that the WTO remains pivotal to international trade.
While attending the 14th Ministerial Conference (MC14) in Yaounde, Cameroon, Goyal also interacted with several global leaders, including the US Trade Representative Jamieson Greer.
“We discussed the WTOMC14 agenda, the next steps in the India-US BTA negotiations, and sought avenues to enhance our economic collaboration and bilateral trade relations,” Goyal shared regarding his dialogue with Greer.
He also conferred with Canada’s Minister of International Trade, Maninder Sidhu, to assess the status of the recently initiated India-Canada CEPA negotiations and to identify methods to strengthen our bilateral trade and economic relationships.
During his discussions with Todd McClay, Minister for Trade and Investment of New Zealand, they exchanged insights on the progress of the MC14 agenda and reviewed the ongoing efforts towards finalizing the recently established India-New Zealand FTA.
“We also talked about ways to further boost bilateral trade and investment while reinforcing collaboration across key sectors of mutual interest,” Goyal noted.
Additionally, Goyal met Omar Hejira, Secretary of State to the Minister of Industry and Trade for Foreign Trade from the Kingdom of Morocco, reaffirming their “historical partnership” and exploring ways to bolster bilateral trade and investment.
Moreover, Goyal engaged with Dwight Fitzgerald Bramble, Minister of Foreign Affairs, Foreign Trade, Foreign Investment and Diaspora Affairs of Saint Vincent and the Grenadines, as well as Kamina Johnson Smith, Senator and Minister of Foreign Affairs and Foreign Trade of Jamaica.
