New Delhi, July 30 (NationPress) A remarkable 4,557 electric vehicle (EV) public charging stations (PCSs) have been established across a vast stretch of 146,342 km encompassing state, National Highways, and Expressways in India, as reported to Parliament on Wednesday.
Leading the charge is Uttar Pradesh with 507 public EV charging stations, followed closely by Karnataka at 489, Maharashtra at 459, Tamil Nadu at 456, and Rajasthan at 424, as stated by Road Transport and Highways Minister Nitin Gadkari in a written response to a query in the Rajya Sabha.
According to data from the Bureau of Energy Efficiency (BEE), the total number of installed EV Public Charging Stations (PCSs) stands at 4,557 across the state/National Highways/Expressways.
The minister further clarified that there are currently no schemes offering incentives to Charging Point Operators (CPOs).
As of April 1, 2025, 4,625 EV charging stations are operational in tier 2 cities throughout the nation.
Furthermore, the government has announced a financial commitment of Rs 2,000 crore under the PM E-Drive scheme, aimed at facilitating the installation of approximately 72,000 EV public charging stations nationwide. These stations will be strategically located along 50 National Highway corridors in high-traffic areas such as metro cities, toll plazas, railway stations, airports, fuel outlets, and state highways, as stated by the Ministry of Heavy Industries.
Launched in October 2024, the PM E-DRIVE scheme aims to bolster electric vehicle adoption through demand incentives and to enhance EV charging infrastructure across the country. The Centre has allocated Rs 10,900 crore for EV subsidies under this initiative.
Additionally, Rs 873.50 crore has been earmarked for the setup of 8,932 Electric Vehicle Public Charging Stations (EVPCS) by three oil marketing companies (OMCs): IOCL, BPCL, and HPCL, under the FAME-II Scheme.
This month, the government also introduced an innovative scheme to provide financial incentives for electric trucks (e-trucks) under the PM E-DRIVE initiative, with incentives reaching up to Rs 9.6 lakh per vehicle.
