New Delhi, Aug 1 (NationPress) The nation now boasts a total of 29,277 electric vehicle (EV) charging stations, as reported to Parliament on Friday.
Karnataka takes the lead with 6,097 EV charging stations, closely followed by Maharashtra with 4,155 and Uttar Pradesh at 2,326, as noted by the Minister of State for Steel and Heavy Industries, Bhupathiraju Srinivasa Varma, in a written response to the Lok Sabha.
The Power Ministry introduced the 'Guidelines for Installation and Operation of Electric Vehicle Charging Infrastructure-2024' in September of last year, alongside the 'Guidelines for Installation and Operation of Battery Swapping and Charging Stations' issued in January this year, aimed at establishing standards and protocols for creating a comprehensive network of EV charging infrastructure, battery charging, and battery swapping stations across the nation.
The minister also revealed that an allocation of Rs 2,000 crore has been designated under the PM E-DRIVE Scheme to facilitate the development of sufficient public charging infrastructure for various types of electric vehicles throughout India in collaboration with ministries, states, and other stakeholders.
Launched in October 2024, the PM E-DRIVE scheme is designed to boost the adoption of electric vehicles (EVs) through demand incentives and to expand EV charging infrastructure nationwide. The government has set aside Rs 10,900 crore for EV subsidies under this initiative.
As for Tier-2 cities, there are currently 4,625 EV charging stations operational in the country (as of April 1, 2025).
Additionally, the government has supported a total of 18,84,905 electric vehicles (EVs) under the Faster Adoption and Manufacturing of (Hybrid and) Electric Vehicles in India (FAME India) scheme as of June 30 this year.
Under the FAME-II initiative, the government has supported 16,29,600 vehicles. The FAME-II scheme allocated a total of Rs 912.50 crore for the installation of 9,332 EV PCS, of which 8,885 EVPCS have been installed (as of June 30), according to Varma.
The FAME schemes are applicable nationwide, including in Tier 2 and Tier 3 cities. The FAME-I Scheme was in effect from 2015 to 2019, while the FAME-II scheme is set to run from 2019 to 2024.
