Key Takeaways

  • India has achieved 100 GW solar PV module manufacturing capacity.
  • This milestone aligns with the Atmanirbhar Bharat vision.
  • The capacity increased from 2.3 GW in 2014 to 100 GW in 2023.
  • 100 manufacturers are now operating, up from 21 in 2021.
  • Government initiatives like the PLI Scheme support this growth.

New Delhi, Aug 13 (NationPress) Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday celebrated India’s historic achievement of establishing 100 GW solar PV module manufacturing capacity, which aligns with the national vision of Atmanirbhar Bharat and the global necessity for a clean energy transition.

“This is yet another milestone towards self-reliance! It demonstrates the success of India's manufacturing capabilities and our commitment to promoting clean energy,” PM Modi stated in a post on X.

His remarks followed the announcement by Minister of New and Renewable Energy Pralhad Joshi regarding this historic milestone - 100 GW Solar PV Module Manufacturing Capacity under the Approved List of Models and Manufacturers (ALMM). The minister pointed out that this represents “a significant increase from merely 2.3 GW in 2014.”

“Guided by the visionary leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and transformative initiatives like the Production Linked Incentive (PLI) Scheme for high-efficiency solar modules, we are constructing a resilient, self-sufficient solar manufacturing ecosystem. This accomplishment fortifies our journey towards Atmanirbhar Bharat and the target of 500 GW non-fossil capacity by 2030,” Minister Joshi remarked.

The government’s dedication is to ensure India’s self-reliance in solar PV manufacturing and to position the country as a significant player in the global value chain.

This dedication is backed by a comprehensive range of initiatives, including the PLI Scheme for High Efficiency Solar PV Modules and efforts to create a fair playing field for Indian manufacturers, he added.

The ALMM Order was issued by the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE) on January 2, 2019.

The first ALMM list for solar PV modules was released on March 10, 2021, with an initial enlisted capacity of approximately 8.2 GW. In just over four years, this capacity has surged more than twelve-fold, surpassing the 100 GW mark.

This extraordinary growth is not merely in terms of capacity but also in the number of manufacturers, which has increased significantly from 21 in 2021 to 100 manufacturers operating 123 manufacturing units at present, according to an official statement.

This expansion includes contributions from both established companies and newcomers, many of whom have embraced high-efficiency technologies and vertically integrated operations.

The outcome is a diverse and competitive manufacturing landscape capable of fulfilling domestic requirements and catering to global markets. Surpassing the 100 GW solar module manufacturing capacity highlights the success of India's solar PV manufacturing narrative and the collaborative efforts of industry, various state governments, and the Government of India, the statement noted.
