Key Takeaways
New Delhi, Feb 5 (NationPress) In a remarkable feat, India has once again been granted the hosting rights for the 2026 Billie Jean King Cup (BJKC) Asia/Oceania Group I event. This prestigious tournament is set to take place at the DLTA Stadium in New Delhi from April 7 to 11.
Commonly known as the World Cup of women's tennis, this event will witness six nations competing in a round-robin format. The top two teams from the tournament will earn a spot in the Billie Jean King Cup Play-offs scheduled for November 2026.
Along with host India, the teams participating in the Asia/Oceania Group I ties include Indonesia, the Republic of Korea, Mongolia, New Zealand, and Thailand.
The matches will occur at the newly upgraded courts of the DLTA Complex, showcasing India's enhanced tennis infrastructure and its growing significance in the international tennis arena.
In the previous year, the Asia-Oceania Group I ties were hosted in Pune. Under the leadership of Captain Vishal Uppal, India achieved commendable victories over Korea, Thailand, Chinese Taipei, and Hong Kong, finishing second behind New Zealand and qualifying for the play-offs for only the second time ever. India aims to maintain this momentum this year as well.
The Asia/Oceania Group I event is part of the fourth tier of the Billie Jean King Cup by Gainbridge, with Regional Group I competitions occurring simultaneously across Europe/Africa and the Americas during the same week.
A total of seven teams from the Regional Group I events worldwide will advance to the play-offs, where they will face the seven losing teams from the Billie Jean King Cup Qualifiers. The tournament will adhere to a single round-robin format, with all teams competing against each other over the five-day event.
Recently, India hosted the Indian Open tournament 2026, which transpired from January 13 to 18 at the Indira Gandhi Stadium in New Delhi. However, issues like pollution, dirty seating, and incidents of pigeons dropping on the courts raised concerns about the organization of the event.
India had also hosted the qualifiers in 2025 in Bengaluru.
