The United Nations officially marks its 80th anniversary today, celebrating eight decades of fostering global peace, human rights, social progress, and sustainable development. United Nations Day, observed on October 24, commemorates the date in 1945 when the UN Charter became effective.
Earlier, UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres shared a video message for the occasion, encouraging global citizens to unite in addressing various challenges. He addressed pressing issues such as "escalating conflicts, climate chaos, runaway technologies, and threats to the very foundation of our institution."
He remarked, 'We the peoples of the United Nations...'. These words are not merely the opening of the UN Charter; they define our identity. The United Nations transcends being an institution; it is a living promise that connects nations, inspires generations, and spans borders. For 80 years, we have strived to forge peace, combat poverty and hunger, promote human rights, and create a more sustainable world together.
As we look to the future, we face immense challenges: escalating conflicts, climate turmoil, runaway technologies, and threats to our institutional fabric. Now is not the time for hesitation or retreat. The world must reaffirm its commitment to solving problems that no nation can tackle alone. On this UN Day, let’s unite and realize the extraordinary potential of the United Nations by acting as one," he added.
Simultaneously, External Affairs Minister (EAM) S Jaishankar unveiled a commemorative postage stamp in New Delhi to celebrate the UN's 80th anniversary, emphasizing the need for reformed multilateralism that reflects the aspirations of the Global South.
"I am pleased to launch a commemorative postage stamp in New Delhi today in honor of the UN's 80th anniversary. I congratulate the India Post Office for successfully organizing the open competition for the stamp design. The stamp appropriately emphasizes the need for peace in this conflict-ridden era. It highlights the call for reformed multilateralism that echoes the hopes and aspirations of the Global South, reinforcing India’s strong commitment to UN ideals and enhanced international cooperation," EAM Jaishankar posted on X.
