India’s Gig Economy Shifts Focus to High-Skill Roles and Tier-2 Cities: Insights from Recent Report
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
New Delhi, April 15 (NationPress) The landscape of gig hiring in India is transitioning from a model focused on volume to one that prioritizes capability, as highlighted in a recent report. Demand is increasingly moving towards enterprise-driven hiring, high-skill remote positions, and emerging talent hubs in Tier-2 cities.
According to the report released by foundit, the overall monthly hiring market experienced a 5% decrease in March compared to the previous month, though it remained relatively stable with a year-on-year increase of 1%.
White-collar gig employment surged from 6.8 million in FY25 to 8.23 million in FY26, with projections estimating it will exceed 10.2 million by FY27. Project-based hiring is now becoming a widely accepted model.
“Major corporations are increasingly adopting gig hiring to address specialized skill shortages, particularly in AI-related and senior positions where flexibility is essential,” stated Anupama Bhimrajka, VP of Marketing at foundit.
She noted the emergence of Tier-2 talent markets and the growing acceptance of remote and hybrid work models, significantly transforming how businesses approach workforce accessibility.
The report further indicated that enterprises beyond startups are leveraging gig hiring to bridge specialized skill gaps in AI-driven roles and senior positions.
As growth trends shift towards AI-centric roles, experienced talent, and Tier-2 cities, there is a notable acceleration in demand for high-skill, impactful segments. India’s gig ecosystem is becoming increasingly decentralized, with rising talent contributions from regions outside metropolitan areas.
Tier-2 cities are positioning themselves as the most potent growth drivers for gig employment, with their share anticipated to soar in the next two fiscal years.
The forecast suggests that the share of gig hiring from Tier-2 cities will climb to 38.8% in FY27, up from 30.7% in FY26, with Coimbatore, Vadodara, Kochi, and Indore emerging as key talent hubs.
The increase in this share is fueled by growth in sectors such as IT services, analytics, manufacturing, GCC-related roles, digital marketing, and remote technology jobs.
Additional fast-developing markets, including Jaipur, Chandigarh, Bhubaneswar, and Lucknow, are also gaining momentum in areas like creative, consulting, analytics, and support roles.
