New Delhi, Sep 5 (NationPress) Chief of Defence Staff (CDS) General Anil Chauhan articulated six critical national security challenges that India is currently facing, emphasizing the need for the nation to be equipped for future confrontations that will extend beyond traditional battlegrounds of land, air, and water.
While addressing an audience in Gorakhpur, General Chauhan pointed out that the challenges India faces are persistent, not fleeting, necessitating ongoing vigilance and a unified strategic approach. He pointed to the ongoing border conflict with China as the foremost challenge.
The second major issue arises from Pakistan's strategy of proxy warfare, aimed at gradually undermining India through covert operations.
The third challenge is the prevailing regional instability, with nearly all neighboring nations experiencing social, political, and economic unrest, which opens doors for external meddling.
According to General Chauhan, the fourth challenge pertains to the evolving landscape of warfare, which now encompasses space and cyberspace among other areas. He emphasized that future conflicts will be multi-domain, necessitating cohesive cooperation among all military branches.
The fifth challenge is linked to the nuclear capabilities of Pakistan and China, which complicate the dynamics of traditional combat.
Finally, the sixth challenge is technological, as warfare becomes increasingly intelligent due to rapid advancements in military technology.
In reference to Operation Sindoor, General Chauhan disclosed that the armed forces were provided with complete operational autonomy during this mission.
He stated, "The goal was not revenge but to establish a clear boundary of our patience," highlighting the indispensable role of National Security Advisor (NSA) Ajit Doval in aspects of target selection, de-escalation, and diplomatic efforts.
His remarks come in the wake of a meeting between PM Modi and Chinese President Xi Jinping at the SCO summit in China. In recent months, India and China have experienced a thawing of relations, including an agreement last October aimed at reducing border tensions, following a discussion between PM Modi and President Xi during the BRICS Summit in Kazan, Russia.
Despite the apparent easing of tensions, General Chauhan reiterated that the border dispute with China remains a significant challenge, continuing to reflect the strains at the Line of Actual Control (LAC).
