New Delhi, Dec 28 (NationPress) The budget airline IndiGo, which encountered significant challenges earlier this month, saw its domestic market share decrease to 63.6 percent in November, as per the latest statistics from the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA). Previously, the airline held a market share of 65.6 percent in October.
The Air India Group (comprising Air India and Air India Express) experienced an increase in its market share to 26.7 percent in November, up from 25.7 percent in the preceding month.
Akasa Air also reported a decline in its domestic market share, dropping to 4.7 percent in November from 5.2 percent in October.
According to the DGCA data, the total number of passengers transported by domestic airlines from January to November 2025 reached 1,526.35 lakhs, compared to 1,464.02 lakhs during the same period last year, marking an annual increase of 4.26 percent and a monthly growth of 6.92 percent.
The cancellation rate for scheduled domestic flights in November 2025 was 1.33 percent.
In response to the recent turmoil caused by IndiGo's operations, which resulted in numerous passengers being stranded for extended periods, the government has provisionally approved three new airlines to commence operations. This move aims to alleviate the operational strain on IndiGo, the leading domestic carrier that has faced scrutiny for its handling of flight schedules.
The Ministry of Civil Aviation has issued a 'no-objection certificate' to regional airlines Shankh Air, Al Hind Air, and FlyExpress.
Earlier this month, IndiGo had to cancel over 4,000 flights affecting major cities such as Delhi, Mumbai, Hyderabad, and Bengaluru, primarily due to a shortage of crew. This shortage was exacerbated by the implementation of the second phase of flight duty time limitations (FDTL), leading to grounded aircraft and disrupted travel plans for numerous passengers.
The government has launched an investigation into IndiGo's extensive flight cancellations that left thousands of travelers stranded across various airports.
