New Delhi, April 26 (NationPress) India experienced an impressive 10.35 percent year-on-year increase in the number of passengers transported by domestic airlines, reaching 431.98 lakh in the last fiscal year (FY25), up from 391.46 lakh in FY24, as per data released by the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) on Saturday.
In March, the number of passengers stood at 145.42 lakh, compared to 133.68 lakh during the same month last year, reflecting a monthly growth rate of 8.79 percent, according to the official statistics.
Low-cost airline IndiGo transported 93.1 lakh passengers, dominating the market with a substantial 64 percent share. The Air India Group, comprising Air India and Air India Express, carried 38.8 lakh passengers, securing a 26.7 percent market share, as highlighted by the DGCA data.
Akasa Air and SpiceJet reported passenger numbers of 7.2 lakh and 4.8 lakh, respectively, with 5 percent and 3.3 percent market shares.
The overall cancellation rate for scheduled domestic airlines in March 2025 was 0.56 percent, according to DGCA.
In March, airlines received a total of 739 passenger-related complaints. The complaint ratio was approximately 0.51 per 10,000 passengers carried during that month.
Flight-related issues were the primary cause of complaints. Out of the 739 complaints received, 733 (or 99.2 percent) were resolved.
Moreover, domestic air passenger traffic in India grew by 6.12 percent to 16.13 crore in 2024, up from 15.2 crore the prior year, according to the DGCA. Additionally, commercial airlines transported over 1.49 crore passengers on domestic routes in December 2024, marking an 8.19 percent increase from the 1.38 crore passengers in December 2023.
To accommodate the rising demand for air travel, airlines are expanding both their fleets and route networks, positioning India as one of the fastest-growing civil aviation markets globally.
