Deadly Drone Strike Targets Iraqi Intelligence Headquarters in Baghdad
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Baghdad, March 21 (NationPress) The Iraqi National Intelligence Service (INIS) reported on Saturday that its headquarters in Baghdad was the target of a terrorist assault, leading to the death of an officer.
According to an INIS announcement, the incident took place at approximately 10:00 a.m. local time and was executed by "outlawed elements," indicating that the intention was to obstruct the agency from fulfilling its responsibilities.
The statement emphasized that these terroristic actions only reinforce their determination to track down the criminals until they are caught and brought to justice, as per reports from Xinhua news agency.
In addition, a source from the Iraqi Interior Ministry disclosed to Xinhua, under the condition of anonymity, that an unidentified booby-trapped drone hit the intelligence headquarters, resulting in the death of an officer and igniting a fire.
This attack occurred amidst escalating tensions following the joint US-Israeli airstrikes on Iran that began on February 28, which prompted Iran and its regional allies to retaliate against Israeli and US interests throughout the Middle East.
Moreover, groups connected with the so-called "Iraqi resistance" asserted that the attack came in the wake of the supposed escape of US intelligence agents due to ongoing shelling at the US Embassy and Victoria Base, although this claim remains unverified.
The incident further unfolds as the Iraqi government continues to assert its backing for the Popular Mobilisation Forces.
On March 19, Iraqi Prime Minister Mohammed Shia al-Sudani visited the headquarters of the Popular Mobilisation Authority, where he was welcomed by senior leadership, including Falih Faisal Al-Fayyad, the Chairman of the Popular Mobilisation Commission.
During this visit, Prime Minister al-Sudani stressed that the Iraqi government cannot accept any attacks aimed at the fighters from the Popular Mobilisation Authority and other branches of the armed forces, commending their significant sacrifices that have contributed to safeguarding Iraq and enhancing its sovereignty and independence. He expressed his unwavering support for this vital force within Iraq's security apparatus,” stated a release from Sudani's office.
Meanwhile, the US Embassy in Baghdad has continued to caution American citizens regarding the security climate in Iraq.
"Iran-aligned terrorist militias have executed widespread assaults on US citizens and facilities associated with the US throughout Iraq, including the Iraqi Kurdistan Region (IKR). American citizens should exit Iraq immediately," the Embassy advised on Saturday.
Earlier in the week, the Embassy had already warned US citizens against traveling to Iraq.
Iran-aligned terrorist groups have frequently targeted the International Zone in central Baghdad.
"The International Zone remains closed, with few exceptions. There have also been recurrent attacks near the Erbil International Airport and the US Consulate General in Erbil. It is advised not to attempt to visit the US Embassy in Baghdad or the Consulate General in Erbil due to the ongoing risk of missiles, drones, and rockets in Iraqi airspace."
