Drone Attack Targets US Embassy in Baghdad Without Casualties
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Baghdad, March 14 (NationPress) The US Embassy located in Baghdad was struck by a drone on Saturday morning, although no immediate reports of casualties have emerged, according to a security source. A booby-trapped drone targeted the embassy within the Green Zone at dawn, leading to smoke rising from the area, as reported by an Iraqi Interior Ministry source who spoke to Xinhua news agency on the condition of anonymity.
This drone strike occurred shortly after a US airstrike on a residential area in the Karrada neighborhood of Baghdad, which resulted in the death of a senior leader and two members of Iraq's Popular Mobilisation Forces (PMF), along with injuries to five civilians in nearby houses, as noted by the ministry source.
In response, the Iraqi Joint Operations Command's Security Media Cell (SMC) issued a statement condemning the alarming escalation of attacks on civilians and military strikes within densely populated areas. The SMC denounced the acts as violations of human rights, asserting that they deserve international classification as crimes.
Earlier, on March 7, the US embassy in Baghdad faced rocket attacks, prompting the activation of its defense systems as explosions were reported.
In recent days, numerous PMF members have lost their lives in various attacks, which the group attributes to US-Israeli operations.
These assaults are taking place amidst rising tensions following joint US-Israeli strikes on Iran that began on February 28, which have led Iran and its regional proxies to retaliate against US and Israeli interests throughout the Middle East.
US President Donald Trump remarked that military operations against Iran are proceeding effectively, claiming that American forces have achieved significant victories as the conflict escalates across the region. Speaking briefly to reporters at Joint Base Andrews on Friday, he described the military campaign as successful, indicating that Iran's capabilities have been severely diminished.
"The situation in Iran is progressing favorably. We have achieved substantial victories today," Trump stated. "I believe everything is going well, and control is solid."
The President emphasized that the operation aims to eliminate what he referred to as a nuclear threat posed by Iran.
