Israeli Forces Announce Killing of Hezbollah Commander Ali Rida Abbas
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Jerusalem, April 19 (NationPress) The Israeli Defense Forces announced on Sunday the elimination of Hezbollah's Bint Jbeil commander, Ali Rida Abbas, along with over 150 members of the organization in what they termed "pre-ceasefire strikes" executed within the 24 hours leading up to a US-brokered truce, according to media reports.
The military stated that Abbas was the fourth commander of Hezbollah in the Bint Jbeil region to be killed by Israel since October 2023. They characterized Bint Jbeil in southern Lebanon as a significant frontline location for Hezbollah's assaults, as reported by the Xinhua News Agency.
Abbas was regarded as one of the high-ranking officials in Hezbollah's military faction and had previously survived Israeli attacks targeting the group's leadership in 2024. Hezbollah has not yet confirmed the report.
In a separate incident, the military reported that one Israeli soldier was killed and nine others injured "during combat" in southern Lebanon, where Israeli forces continue to be stationed despite the ceasefire.
According to Israel's state-owned Kan TV, this reservist lost his life when a military bulldozer detonated an explosive device laid by Hezbollah. This incident marks the second Israeli military casualty since a 10-day truce was initiated between Israel and Lebanon at midnight Thursday into Friday local time (2100 GMT).
Since the outbreak of hostilities between Israel and Hezbollah in early March 2026, amidst the ongoing Iran war, 15 Israeli soldiers have been reported killed, as per military statistics.
The Israeli military claims to have targeted approximately 1,800 Hezbollah members and struck around 300 military infrastructure sites, which include launchers, command centers, and weapons storage facilities across various locations in Lebanon.
Despite the ceasefire, the Israeli military affirmed that they will "continue to act to eliminate any threats to Israeli civilians and soldiers."
Israel's Defense Minister, Israel Katz, asserted that disarming Hezbollah, whether through military or political avenues, remains a primary goal of their ongoing campaign.
