Israeli Diplomat in Mumbai Denounces Violence Against Hindus in Bangladesh

Mumbai, Dec 14 (NationPress) The Consul-General of Israel in Mumbai, Kobbi Shoshani, has decried the persistent violence in Bangladesh and expressed solidarity with the Hindus facing persecution there, during a session held on Saturday.

"What is occurring there is intolerable," stated Shoshani, addressing the troubling situation of Bangladeshi Hindus that has garnered global attention and concern.

He stressed the need to tackle the difficulties encountered by this minority group and shared a common understanding of their suffering, drawing parallels with the historical experiences of Jews who have lived in India without fear or oppression.

"We know what it means for daughters and children to be killed and harmed by criminals," remarked Shoshani, alluding to the recent tragedies impacting both communities.

During a plenary session at the World Hindu Economic Forum (WHEF) in Mumbai, Shoshani expressed his appreciation to Prime Minister Narendra Modi and to India for their support of both Israel and Bangladeshi Hindus.

“We will always remember the events of October 7, 2023,” he said, emphasizing the significance of unity in the fight against terrorism, as both India and Israel face similar security challenges from extremism.

Shoshani noted that such crises can foster innovations, citing improvements in telecommunications and medical technology, while underscoring that military strength is crucial for economic advancement for both nations.

“A strong economy cannot exist with a weak military,” stated the envoy, reiterating that a robust military is vital for economic stability.

Referring to India as “Israel’s closest ally in Asia,” he praised the nation’s vibrant culture and its significant contributions to the global community, highlighting the necessity for ongoing partnership between the two countries.

Shoshani was appointed to Mumbai by the Israeli Ministry of Foreign Affairs following the tragic 26/11 (2008) terrorist attacks, where Pakistani extremists targeted the Chabad House in Colaba, resulting in the deaths and injuries of several Jews.

Earlier, Aaron Solomon, a member of the Indian-Jewish community, initiated a session at the WHEF on collaborative opportunities between the two nations, reflecting on their unique relationships.

Solomon recounted the long-standing presence of Jews in India, noting that their ancestors arrived on the Konkan coast (in Maharashtra) around 2,000 years ago.

He mentioned that when he was a teenager, there were over 50,000 Jews in India, but today, only about 4,000 remain, having integrated and adapted to the local culture without experiencing any anti-Semitic sentiments.
