Japan international Ko Itakura has returned to Borussia Monchengladbach, with the Bundesliga club confirming the re-signing of the centre-back from Ajax Amsterdam on 20 August — just one year after he had departed the Rhineland outfit. The 29-year-old has put pen to paper on a contract running until 2030.

'I am very happy to be back at Borussia,' Itakura said. 'I missed the club a lot and, when the offer came, I immediately decided to return. For me, it feels like home again.' Itakura first arrived at Gladbach from Manchester City in the summer of 2022, having previously spent roughly two and a half years on loan at Dutch second-division side Groningen after joining City from Japan in January 2019. He also had a notable loan spell at Schalke 04 during the 2021-22 season, where he scored four goals in 31 second-tier appearances. Over three seasons at Gladbach, he made 80 competitive appearances and contributed seven goals before his move to Ajax in 2025. In Amsterdam, he featured in 19 matches and scored once across the 2025-26 campaign.

At international level, the defender has earned 42 senior caps for Japan and scored twice for the national side, cementing his status as one of the more experienced Japanese players in European club football.
