Amaravati, April 17 (NationPress) Former Chief Minister of Andhra Pradesh and YSR Congress Party leader Y. S. Jagan Mohan Reddy criticized the opposing parties for their stance against the bill aimed at amending the Women’s Reservation Act in Parliament, urging them to reflect on their achievements.

Following the failure of the Constitution (131st Amendment) Bill, 2026, to secure a two-thirds majority in the Lok Sabha, Jagan Mohan Reddy took to ‘X’ to challenge those who voted against the proposal.

He expressed concern that if the delimitation process occurs based on the 2026 census, the situation for the South will deteriorate further.

He remarked, “Opposing parties must genuinely ask themselves; what have they accomplished? The reality is that the numbers for the South would decline, and the women’s reservation bill has been delayed! There is no justice for the South nor for women! Should the 2026 census take place, the conditions for the South will worsen, penalizing us for our disciplined approach to family planning.”

In response, the president of the Andhra Pradesh Congress Committee, Y. S. Sharmila Reddy, stated that the BJP's deceptive tactics regarding women’s reservation have failed.

She claimed that attempts to push through illegitimate laws under the guise of women's issues have not succeeded.

She commented, “The BJP's schemes, designed to undermine federalism in the name of empowerment, have proven ineffective. The INDIA alliance's just cause has triumphed over the NDA's wrongful actions. This is a victory for Indian democracy and the people. This marks the end of the BJP's politically malicious agenda and serves as a strong rebuke to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who engaged in petty politics regarding women, and to the BJP's religious fanaticism.”

Sharmila clarified that what failed was merely the “misguided and aimless” Delimitation Bill, not the Women’s Reservation Bill itself.

She emphasized that the Opposition has never opposed the Women’s Reservation Bill. “What was presented under the term 'Nari' (Women) was actually a Delimitation Bill. What was defeated today was solely the proposal to redraw constituencies. The Opposition successfully blocked the conspiracy to alter the Constitution,” she stated.

She added, “The Women’s Reservation Bill was indeed approved in 2023. Instead of continuing to attack the Opposition, the BJP must now promptly implement the Women’s Reservation Bill of 2023. The BJP needs to demonstrate its true commitment to women’s issues. The 33% reservation must be enacted immediately across all 543 parliamentary seats.”

Point of View

It's evident that the debate surrounding the Women's Reservation Bill is a significant point of contention. Jagan Mohan Reddy's criticisms highlight the ongoing struggle for gender representation in politics, while Sharmila Reddy's defense underscores the complexities of the legislative process. This issue remains pivotal as it impacts both women's rights and regional representation.
