United Nations, Sep 24 (NationPress) External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar has introduced a multi-faceted strategy for the nations of the Global South, aiming to leverage their collective strengths to tackle emerging challenges.
During the high-level gathering of "Like-Minded Global South Countries" convened on the margins of the UN General Assembly session on Tuesday, he emphasized the need for collaboration to address issues spanning from politics and diplomacy to development and technology.
The meeting saw participation from eighteen countries worldwide, representing a range of political and economic systems, as well as varying levels of development.
Countries such as Singapore, Indonesia, Nigeria, Cuba, Chad, Jamaica, Vietnam, Mauritius, and Morocco were part of this initiative.
This forum is part of India’s efforts to amplify its role as a voice for the Global South.
The Foreign Minister of Maldives stated, "The strength of the Global South lies in its unity and collective action." He highlighted critical areas for joint pursuit, including climate action, Security Council reform, and development financing.
Echoing the sentiments of the participants, he affirmed, "Maldives will continue to partner with like-minded nations to foster inclusive growth and resilient development pathways."
Jaishankar pointed out that the nations could utilize their unique strengths, experiences, and achievements to support fellow Global South countries.
He mentioned vaccines, digital capabilities, educational resources, agricultural practices, and the culture of small and medium enterprises as areas ripe for collaboration.
Looking forward, he stressed the importance of discussing the potential of emerging technologies, particularly artificial intelligence.
On the diplomatic front, he advocated for united efforts in reforming the UN and enhancing multilateralism.
He urged the utilization of existing forums to strengthen their solidarity.
