Jammu, Aug 30 (NationPress) - The District Magistrate (DM) of J&K’s Jammu district has mandated that all private water tankers are to be placed at the service of the Jal Shakti Department due to the critical situation caused by flooding.
In an official directive, the DM highlighted the disruption of the potable water supply system due to the floods in Jammu district, emphasizing the need for prompt restoration of safe drinking water access.
The order noted that private water tankers have been operating without regulation, resulting in arbitrary pricing, unequal access, and the risk of distributing unsafe water, all of which pose a threat to public health and safety.
“Effective immediately, all private water tankers within District Jammu are prohibited from independently supplying or selling water to any household or commercial establishment,” the order stated.
Furthermore, all private water tankers are requisitioned by the district administration and directed to assist the Jal Shakti (PHE) department of Jammu in ensuring equitable water distribution.
The directive also requisitions all private borewells in the district for tanker filling, placing them under the control of the Jal Shakti (PHE) department.
All Sub-Divisional Magistrates (SDMs) are tasked with identifying individuals or establishments operating private tankers and ensuring their compliance with the directive by transferring control to the Jal Shakti (PHE) department.
A significant crisis of safe drinking water has emerged in Jammu district following the recent floods, as many primary water sources have been rendered muddy and unsafe.
Tragically, the floods have claimed ten lives, with three individuals reported missing due to landslides and cloudbursts affecting the Reasi and Ramban districts.
According to state officials, seven individuals lost their lives when a landslide devastated a residential area in Mahore, Reasi district, during intense rainfall.
Additionally, three fatalities occurred overnight in a cloudburst in the Rajgarh area of Ramban, Jammu division.
The administration reports that numerous homes have been damaged, with some completely swept away by floodwaters.
This disaster adds to a distressing pattern of destructive events in Jammu and Kashmir this month, where heavy rainfall, flash floods, and landslides have already caused extensive damage.
In various districts of the Jammu region, large-scale devastation has been documented, with over 46 fatalities confirmed in rain-related incidents thus far.
In Reasi and Doda districts alone, at least 16 people have lost their lives as heavy rainfall has triggered numerous landslides, swollen rivers, and flood conditions that have engulfed many villages.
Over the past week, districts such as Jammu, Samba, and Kathua have also experienced severe damage to property and infrastructure.
