Shivamogga, Sep 24 (NationPress) A tragic incident unfolded in Karnataka's Shivamogga district, where a young woman was reportedly murdered by her spurned lover, who allegedly shoved her into the Bhadra canal. A formal complaint has been lodged at the Bhadravathi Rural Police Station.
The authorities have apprehended the jilted lover, identified as 20-year-old Surya, along with his father, Swamy.
The victim, 19-year-old Swathi, was a second-year undergraduate student. According to police statements, Surya claimed that their families disapproved of their relationship, leading both to jump into the canal in a suicide pact.
Surya alleged that he managed to escape using a tree trunk, while Swathi tragically drowned.
Swathi's family has accused Surya of murder, alleging that he had subjected her to constant emotional abuse in an attempt to pressure her into marriage, despite their decision to wait until she completed her education.
Conflicts had arisen between the couple, and on September 21, Surya allegedly took Swathi to the canal and pushed her in after she refused his marriage proposal.
Swathi's body was recovered on Tuesday evening.
In conversations with the media, a family member expressed deep anguish, stating, "Our daughter was a dedicated student at Sahyadri College. Surya had been tormenting her through phone threats, claiming he would harm himself if she did not agree to marry him. He even resorted to self-mutilation to manipulate her and ultimately forced her to the canal, where he committed this heinous act."
Additionally, they suggested that Surya fabricated a narrative post-crime, pretending he had also jumped into the canal in a misguided attempt to feign suicide.
The police are actively pursuing further investigations into this disturbing case.
In a separate incident, a man was arrested in Bengaluru after he stabbed his second wife multiple times in public, surrendering to authorities shortly thereafter. This individual, 43-year-old Lohitashwa, also known as Lokesh, believed his wife was unfaithful, although this claim remains unverified.
