Is South Korea's Joint Investigation Team Examining Unification Church Allegations?
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Seoul, Jan 6 (NationPress) The prosecution and police have established a collaborative investigation team on Tuesday to address multiple allegations of bribery involving the Unification Church, the Shincheonji Church of Jesus, and politicians, according to the South Korea's Supreme Prosecutors' Office (SPO).
This initiative follows the conclusion of the legally mandated investigation period for special counsel Min Joong-ki's team last month, which was unable to fully uncover the specifics of the alleged bribery between the Unification Church and various lawmakers from both the ruling and primary opposition factions.
The SPO indicated that the joint task force will investigate not just the Unification Church but also the religious sect Shincheonji and other faith organizations to ascertain if they engaged in bribery towards politicians and interfered in electoral processes, as reported by Yonhap news agency.
Kim Tae-hoon, the head of the Seoul Southern District Prosecutors’ Office, has been assigned to lead this joint team, which will consist of 47 prosecutors and police personnel. They will operate from offices within the Seoul High Prosecutors' Office and the Seoul Central District Prosecutors' Office.
President Lee Jae Myung had previously instructed the formation of a special or joint investigation headquarters to tackle the scandal, emphasizing the need to uncover the truth and ensure accountability to prevent recurrence of similar offenses.
The bribery allegations emerged during Min's inquiry into former first lady Kim Keon Hee's suspected corruption, leading to the indictment of Rep. Kweon Seong-dong from the main opposition People Power Party and an investigation into Rep. Chun Jae-soo from the ruling Democratic Party, among other notable figures.
Discussions about appointing a special counsel to investigate the matter have stalled due to disagreements between the opposing parties.
