Union Minister Pralhad Joshi on Friday, 19 June laid the foundation stone for the expansion of testing facilities at the National Test House (NTH) campus in Mumbai, calling a robust quality assurance ecosystem indispensable for consumer protection, product reliability, and ease of doing business. The event marked a significant milestone in India's push to build world-class testing and certification infrastructure.

What Was Inaugurated

The minister inaugurated a Microbiological Testing Laboratory at the NTH Mumbai campus during the event. He also virtually inaugurated two additional facilities: a Shoe Testing Facility at NTH's Northern Region centre in Ghaziabad, and the NTH-AURIC Satellite Centre at the National Industrial Corridor Development Corporation's AURIC City in Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar, Maharashtra. The programme commenced with a Bhoomi Pujan ceremony before the foundation stone was formally laid.

'Strengthening the country's quality ecosystem is essential for improving the global competitiveness of Indian products and advancing the vision of Atmanirbhar Bharat,' Joshi said at the event. He described world-class testing infrastructure as a critical pillar of the government's self-reliance agenda, praising the Department of Consumer Affairs and the National Test House for expanding advanced testing capabilities and making quality testing services more accessible to industries and consumers alike.

Joshi toured the laboratories at the Mumbai facility and interacted with scientists, technical experts, and officials to review ongoing modernisation initiatives and existing testing capabilities. The engagement underscored the government's intent to move beyond ribbon-cutting and assess ground-level progress in upgrading India's quality assurance network.

The newly inaugurated and upcoming facilities are expected to significantly enhance testing capacity across key sectors, strengthen compliance with national and international standards, and contribute to both consumer safety and industrial competitiveness. The National Test House operates under the Ministry of Consumer Affairs, Food and Public Distribution and serves as one of India's oldest and largest government testing organisations. The current expansion aligns with the Centre's broader Quality Council of India framework and its push to align Indian standards with those of the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) and international bodies. With the new satellite centre at AURIC City, the NTH is also positioning itself closer to industrial clusters, reducing turnaround time for manufacturers in Maharashtra's emerging industrial corridors.
