Uttarakhand helicopter crash near Joshimath kills 6; CM Dhami orders probe
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
A helicopter operated by Trans Bharat Aviation crashed near Chai village, close to Joshimath in Uttarakhand's Chamoli district, on Friday, 30 October, killing all six people on board, including the pilot. Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami swiftly ordered a detailed investigation into the crash and assured all possible assistance to the families of the deceased.
How the Crash Unfolded
The helicopter had taken off from the Badrinath Civil Helipad at approximately 1.12 pm, bound for Sahastradhara Helipad. Contact with the aircraft was lost at around 1.14 pm, just minutes after departure, near Joshimath, according to Chamoli Superintendent of Police Surjeet Singh Panwar.
'Local personnel stationed in the nearby area reported that the helicopter was seen heading into a valley below while flying at a considerable height,' SP Panwar told reporters. Officials have cited the crash time as approximately 2 pm. The aircraft went down in terrain that officials described as difficult to access.
Victims Identified
The pilot was identified as Captain Himanshu Sabharwal, who hailed from Delhi. All five passengers — Pratap, Arun, Shankar Gowda, Sudheer K., and H.S. Natraja — were from Karnataka, according to police. Officials confirmed there were no women or children on board.
According to official information, Shankar Gowda was an advocate, while H.S. Nataraj ran a poultry business in Huliyurdurga, Karnataka. Victim Pratap was reportedly a businessman based in Karnataka's Hassan district.
Rescue and Recovery Operations
Joint teams comprising the Uttarakhand Police, the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF), and the Army swung into action immediately after receiving news of the crash. The bodies of all six individuals were recovered from the site. As of Friday evening, the operation to transport the remains from the crash site — located in challenging terrain — to a road-connected point was underway.
The Karnataka State Disaster Management Authority (KSDMA) stated that the bodies were being taken to Joshimath for post-mortem examination. This comes as part of a coordinated inter-state response to return the mortal remains to Karnataka at the earliest.
Karnataka Government Steps In
The Karnataka Chief Minister's Office, the Relief Commissioner, and the Resident Commissioner's Office at Karnataka Bhavan are actively coordinating with Uttarakhand authorities to facilitate the transportation of the remains. 'The state government has assured all possible assistance to the families of the deceased,' an official statement from the Karnataka government read.
CM Dhami's Directive and Condolences
Chief Minister Dhami expressed his condolences to the bereaved families and directed the district administration to ensure prompt relief and support. He emphasised that all aspects of the crash must be examined thoroughly and with the utmost seriousness. The probe is expected to look into operational, meteorological, and regulatory factors behind the accident. With Trans Bharat Aviation under scrutiny, the findings could have broader implications for helicopter operations in the ecologically sensitive and high-altitude Char Dham corridor, where aviation activity intensifies during the annual pilgrimage season.
