According to election officials, 23 candidates withdrew their nominations in the last two days, leading to the current number of contenders.

The deadline for withdrawal of nominations concluded on Friday.

Initially, 211 candidates had filed their nominations for this by-election. However, nominations for 130 candidates were rejected, while the papers of 81 candidates were deemed valid.

The main contestants have had their nominations accepted, setting the stage for a probable triangular contest between the ruling Congress Party, the opposition Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS), and the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).

The by-election was necessitated by the passing of BRS leader Maganti Gopinath, who won the Jubilee Hills seat for three consecutive terms until his death in June. The BRS has nominated his wife, Maganti Sunitha, to contest.

The Congress has chosen Naveen Yadav as its candidate, while the BJP has once again put forward Lankala Deepak Reddy.

In the previous elections of 2023, Gopinath triumphed over former Indian cricket captain and Congress candidate Mohammed Azharuddin by a margin of 16,337 votes.

In that election, Gopinath garnered 80,549 votes, while Azharuddin received 64,212 votes. Deepak Reddy from the BJP finished third with 25,866 votes.

The All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM), whose candidate placed fourth in 2023, is not participating this time and has expressed support for the Congress candidate.

Meanwhile, Hyderabad District Election Officer R. V. Karnan announced the final electoral rolls on Friday. The constituency has a total of 401,365 voters, including 208,561 men and 192,779 women. Additionally, 2,383 new voters were added to the rolls after the election notification.
