New Delhi, March 9 (NationPress) Four minors have been detained in connection with the alleged attack on a Manipuri woman and her transgender companion in the Malviya Nagar region of South Delhi, as reported by police on Monday.
Delhi Police stated that the suspects were caught during operations in the area following the report of the incident at the Malviya Nagar Police Station.
Authorities confirmed that all four individuals involved in this case are minors and are currently in custody for further interrogation. Legal actions are being initiated according to the regulations applicable to juveniles.
The incident reportedly took place on Sunday evening near the local court complex in Malviya Nagar.
Initial reports suggest that a young woman from Manipur and her transgender friend from Assam were walking in a park when a group of boys allegedly started making racially charged comments towards them.
When the woman raised her objections, the situation escalated into a confrontation.
The victims claimed that the group then physically attacked them, using punches and belts while also shouting abusive and derogatory language.
Sources revealed that the victims had faced similar verbal abuse in the area previously.
Upon receiving reports about the incident, a police team quickly arrived at the scene near the court complex to begin their investigation.
The injured woman was subsequently transported to Safdarjung Hospital for medical examination and treatment.
Authorities reported that she is currently in stable condition and suffered only minor injuries from the assault.
Police officials stated that the victims' statements are being recorded, and further legal measures will be pursued based on the investigation's findings.
The police emphasized that the investigation is ongoing and appropriate actions will be taken against any individuals found culpable.
Earlier in the day, Chief Minister of Meghalaya, Conrad K. Sangma, expressed his outrage over the assault, describing it as "sickening" and called for strict action from the authorities.
In a post on social media platform X, CM Sangma highlighted the worrying trend of repeated attacks on individuals from the Northeast in mainland India.
“I am outraged by the continuous attacks on Northeastern individuals in mainland India. The physical assault on our citizens from Manipur and Assam near Saket Court, Delhi is shocking. Racial bullying must not become the new normal, and we must take decisive action,” the Chief Minister stated.
