Chennai, July 24 (NationPress) Kamal Haasan, the veteran actor and president of Makkal Needhi Maiam (MNM), has embarked on a journey to New Delhi to officially take his oath as a member of the Rajya Sabha on Friday.
His nomination to the Upper House comes as part of the alliance led by DMK.
Haasan departed from Chennai on an Air India flight early Thursday morning.
Speaking to reporters at the airport prior to his flight, he conveyed his appreciation and expressed enthusiasm about this new phase in his political career.
"I believe the reporters are not just here to gather news but also to bid me farewell. I thank you for that," he stated.
"With the support and goodwill of the public, I am heading to Delhi to take my oath. I view this as both an honor and a duty as an Indian, and I am committed to fulfilling it with pride," he asserted, radiating confidence and a sense of responsibility.
When questioned about the topics he plans to address in his inaugural speech in the Rajya Sabha, Haasan chose not to disclose specific details.
"I shouldn't reveal what my inaugural speech will entail here," he responded.
Nonetheless, he alluded to a sense of continuity and intention in his political journey thus far.
"If you examine my six-year journey, you'll understand my trajectory," he noted, referencing the development of his political ideology and the progression of MNM since its establishment in 2018.
Haasan's entry into the Rajya Sabha is perceived as a pivotal moment in Tamil Nadu politics, particularly as it signifies the DMK's intention to fortify its alliance with MNM.
This transition also marks Haasan's formal engagement in parliamentary politics after years of public interaction through electoral contests and social contributions. Analysts suggest that his presence in the Upper House could introduce a distinctive mix of cultural, social, and political perspectives, owing to his rich background in cinema, literature, and public service.
Haasan, a staunch advocate for governance reforms, education, and a scientific approach, is anticipated to leverage his platform in the Rajya Sabha to advance these causes. His inaugural speech is eagerly awaited by both political enthusiasts and the general public.
