Chandigarh, Oct 14 (NationPress) Just hours after Haryana DGP Shatrujeet Kapur was placed on leave amidst the turmoil surrounding the tragic suicide of IPS officer Y. Puran Kumar, Om Parkash Singh has been assigned the additional responsibilities of the Director General of Police.
The decision to send DGP Kapur on leave was made in light of growing demands from Kumar's family for accountability regarding alleged harassment faced by him.
Om Parkash Singh, an IPS officer from the 1992 batch, is currently serving as the Managing Director of the Haryana Police Housing Corporation in Panchkula, as well as holding positions as DGP of the Haryana Narcotics Control Bureau (HSNCB) and Director of the Forensic Science Laboratory (FSL) in Madhuban.
The order for Singh's additional charge was issued by Additional Chief Secretary (Home) Sumita Mishra Singh, stating, "The Governor of Haryana is pleased to assign the additional charge of DGP, Haryana, to Om Parkash Singh, IPS (1992 RR), during the leave period of Shatrujeet Singh Kapur."
In a related development, the Chandigarh Police have filed a first information report (FIR) following the examination of a "final note" left by Puran Kumar, who reportedly took his own life on October 7.
This FIR was initiated just hours after Kumar's wife, a senior IAS officer named Amneet P. Kumar, requested Chief Minister Nayab Singh Saini to intervene for the registration of an FIR and the suspension and arrest of those implicated in her husband's “final note.”
Kumar's wife has not yet consented to an autopsy for her husband, expressing concerns that "powerful, high-ranking officials of Haryana are involved in the case."
Eight days post-suicide, his body remains in a mortuary, with ongoing tensions between Kumar's wife and the state government concerning demands for the arrest of DGP Kapur and the dismissed Rohtak Superintendent of Police Narendra Bijarniya.
Describing the incident as profoundly distressing, State Leader of Opposition Bhupinder Hooda stated, "Our only request is for justice to be served. It is the government's duty to ensure accountability and not to shy away from it."
The Punjab State Scheduled Castes Commission expressed dissatisfaction with the Chandigarh Police's report regarding the suicide case.
According to the police report, a Special Investigation Team (SIT) has been formed, and the investigation is currently ongoing.
Chairman Jasvir Singh Garhi criticized the Chandigarh Police for not including a copy of the FIR in their report, raising concerns over the lack of clarity concerning the status of the 14 individuals mentioned in the suicide note.
