In Hubballi, on December 27, Karnataka Labour Minister Santosh S. Lad visited the family of Vivekanand Doddamani, whose pregnant wife was tragically killed by her father in what appears to be an honour killing. During his visit, the minister promised safety and support to the Doddamani family, who were reportedly attacked by the wife's father and are currently receiving medical care.
Minister Lad assured the family of government aid, including security, assistance, and compensation, stating that necessary legal actions would be pursued. He also checked on the health status of the injured individuals and directed officials to provide the best medical treatment.
Additionally, he toured Inanveerapur village, where the incident occurred, to gather more information regarding the case. Key figures present during his visit included MLA N. Konareddy, Police Commissioner N. Shashikumar, Zilla Panchayat CEO Bhuvanesh Patil, and District Superintendent of Police Gunjan Arya.
On December 21, a horrific incident unfolded in Inanveerapur village when a man brutally murdered his daughter. The girl's father, along with relatives, also attacked her husband, Vivekanand Doddamani, and other family members.
The victims, Mareppa Doddamani, Sunil Harijan, Sangeetha Harijan, Renavva, Ananya Doddamani, Yallappa Doddamani, and Huvamma Doddamani, suffered injuries during the assault.
According to police reports, Manya Patil, who belonged to the Lingayat community, married Vivekanand, a Dalit. The couple had known each other from their village and developed a close relationship while studying. They became engaged through Instagram and eventually married on June 19 at the registrar's office in Hubballi.
Initial investigations indicated that Manya had threatened suicide if Vivekanand did not marry her. After their marriage, police intervened to mediate between both families, leading to a temporary resolution. The couple relocated to Haveri but returned to their village on December 8, believing that Manya's pregnancy would be accepted by both families.
However, familial tensions escalated, prompting the Hubballi Rural police to once again mediate between the families to prevent further conflict.
Despite these efforts, Manya's father and relatives allegedly invaded her home in the village and fatally attacked her. In connection with the incident, police have arrested Manya's father and two other suspects.
Vivekanand has called for the death penalty for the perpetrators of this heinous act.
