Karnataka leadership change: K'taka minister says can't read Rahul Gandhi's mind
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
All eyes in the Congress party are fixed on a high-stakes meeting scheduled for Tuesday in New Delhi, where the party's national leadership will sit down with Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah and Deputy Chief Minister and Karnataka Pradesh Congress Committee (KPCC) president D.K. Shivakumar. Both leaders flew into Delhi late Monday night after being summoned by the high command, setting off intense speculation about a possible leadership change in the state.
What the Meeting Is About
Karnataka Minister for Large and Medium Industries M.B. Patil, a close associate of Siddaramaiah, told reporters in Delhi that several agenda items are expected to feature in the discussions. These include the upcoming Rajya Sabha elections, Legislative Council polls, demands for a cabinet reshuffle, strengthening the party organisation, and strategising against the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)-led central government.
'In the backdrop of inflation and the ongoing crisis in the country, Rahul Gandhi, AICC President Mallikarjun Kharge, and the party general secretaries have invited Siddaramaiah and D.K. Shivakumar for discussions. We will know the details once the meeting is over,' Patil said.
Patil Sidesteps Leadership Change Question
When pressed on whether a change of guard in Karnataka was on the cards, Patil was careful not to speculate. He repeatedly deferred to the authority of the party's central leadership, saying such decisions rested entirely with the high command.
'In the Congress party, the high command is supreme, and its decision is final. Whatever decision the leadership takes, we will abide by it,' he said. On the specific question of what Rahul Gandhi intended, Patil was direct: 'I cannot speak about what is in Rahul Gandhi's mind.'
Siddaramaiah's Camp Watches Closely
The arrival of Siddaramaiah in Delhi alongside several of his close associates has drawn attention, though Patil dismissed any reading into it. 'There is nothing unusual about meeting the party's national leadership,' he said. He also said he was unaware of whether Shivakumar would be present alongside Siddaramaiah during the meeting with the high command.
Patil also pushed back against the characterisation of certain ministers as Siddaramaiah's 'kitchen cabinet', asserting that all ministers held equal standing. 'There is no distinction among us,' he said.
Background and What's at Stake
The Congress swept back to power in Karnataka in May 2023, ending the BJP's tenure in the state. Since then, questions over a potential mid-term leadership rotation — a practice the party has used in states like Rajasthan and Madhya Pradesh — have surfaced periodically. The Siddaramaiah-Shivakumar dynamic has been closely watched, with both leaders commanding distinct support bases within the state unit.
This is not the first time both leaders have been called to Delhi amid swirling speculation; similar exercises have previously concluded without any formal change. Whether Tuesday's meeting follows the same pattern or marks a turning point will become clear once the high command communicates its decision.
