Venugopal, the Congress General Secretary and Rajya Sabha member, vehemently criticized the Kerala government on Friday regarding its initiative to host the 'Ayyappa Congregation', accusing Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan of manipulating the sentiments surrounding Lord Ayyappa for political advantage.
This strong criticism arises as the Vijayan administration is set to conduct the Global Ayyappa Congregation along the banks of the renowned Pampa River on Saturday, with 3,500 participants already registered.
In a publicly shared letter directed at the Chief Minister, Venugopal described this undertaking as “sheer hypocrisy” and claimed that the government was attempting to mask its previous shortcomings with superficial actions.
“The same Chief Minister who previously led the charge against Sabarimala traditions is now feigning a commitment to faith by spearheading the Ayyappa Congregation. The citizens of Kerala can clearly discern the insincerity and the political agendas behind this move,” wrote Venugopal.
He cautioned that if the pressing issues raised by the community remain unaddressed, Vijayan would struggle to face the devotees at Pampa.
Addressing the controversial women’s entry matter, the Congress leader pointed out that the government’s unilateral approach to enforce the Supreme Court ruling without engaging in dialogue with the devotees has caused lasting wounds.
“The unrest from that time continues to haunt the faithful, making it quite ironic that the very individual responsible is now presenting himself as a protector of tradition,” he remarked.
Venugopal also criticized the administration for its neglect of Sabarimala’s infrastructure.
“In the past nine years, there has been no significant progress in areas such as drinking water supplies, the cleanliness of the Pampa River, crowd management, or transportation. A government incapable of safeguarding the gold offerings made to Lord Ayyappa lacks the moral standing to earn the trust of devotees,” he asserted.
He further accused the CPI(M) Devaswom Ministers of belittling faith by not showing reverence before the deity.
Demanding transparency, Venugopal questioned whether the LDF government would retract the contentious affidavit filed in the Supreme Court, which, in his view, enabled the infringement of temple traditions.
At the very least, he suggested that the government should dismiss cases against those who took part in 'nama japa' (protest) marches.
Taking a jab at the ruling party’s ideological inconsistencies, Venugopal pondered whether the Ayyappa Congregation indicated a departure from the CPI(M)’s atheistic roots, only to be abandoned post-Assembly elections.
He also called for an apology from the Chief Minister to the Sabarimala Thantri, whom he allegedly insulted during the women's entry conflict.
Earlier, Devasom Minister V.N. Vasavan stated in the Kerala Assembly that all preparations for the Global Ayyappa Congregation, including the participation of foreign delegates, had been finalized.
“The Opposition is attempting to thwart the Global Ayyappa Congregation out of frustration following their repeated failures. Initially, they claimed, alongside the RSS, that the congregation would be obstructed. They then approached the High Court and Supreme Court but met with failure. Now, without any RSS presence in the Assembly, they are trying to act on its behalf,” remarked Vasavan.
